Earlier this year, we launched a campaign to stop devastating cuts to SEPTA and the Philly region. After state lawmakers failed to meet an August 14th deadline for funding and SEPTA implemented a 20% cut to its service, we redoubled our efforts to bring back our trolleys, trains, and buses.
In every possible way, you answered this call. You canvassed riders at transit stops, passed out flyers, rallied at the offices of elected officials, and made transit funding the #1 issue in our state. We want to thank you for your hard work and share next steps in our fight for Philly to have the safe, reliable, and accessible transit system it deserves.
By flexing its capital funding for operating expenses, SEPTA has announced that it will restore full service on September 14th and will be able to operate service for the next two years.
32 bus routes will be back in service, 16 will be lengthened, and 63 lines will have more frequent service along with restored SEPTA metro service. While this crisis was not resolved with the permanent, sustainable funding that SEPTA and transit systems across PA need, your work made a difference in bringing back our trolleys, trains, and buses.
We are looking forward to organizing with you moving forward so that SEPTA never experiences cuts like this again. We hope you can join us for a gathering to connect with fellow volunteers and learn next steps for our campaign.
